Police have credited two armed bystanders with helping to stop a man accused of fatally shooting a woman in a grocery store parking lot.

Allen Thomas Prince faces one count of first-degree murder, along with multiple charges of armed criminal action and assault, following a shooting on May 25 at the Price Chopper supermarket in Pleasant Hill, Missouri, according to court records.

A sergeant from the Pleasant Hill Police Department stated that two civilians detained Prince at gunpoint after the incident.

In a probable cause statement, the sergeant recounted a witness’s account: the individual had been sitting in his car on a phone call when he saw Prince reach into a vehicle and retrieve a rifle. The witness reported seeing Prince fire one shot at a woman standing near her car, causing her to collapse. He then said Prince scanned the parking lot and fired a second shot at a juvenile who was collecting shopping carts.

As Prince looked around again, the witness got into his vehicle and started to leave. That’s when he noticed another man approaching Prince with a handgun. The witness said he retrieved his own firearm and joined the other man in holding Prince at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived.

The Pleasant Hill Police Department did not promptly respond to a request for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation. Court documents identified the weapon as a .243 Winchester bolt-action rifle.

Chief Tommy Wright of the Pleasant Hill Police Department commended the actions of the two citizens, according to reports from Kansas City’s KHSB 41. “I applaud them,” Wright said. “I’m grateful to have people like that in our community. We believe in looking out for one another—this is a community that genuinely supports itself—and these two stepped up to stop further harm.”

Court records also show that Prince had previously been charged with a felony in October 2025 for threatening to shoot someone. At that time, authorities found a 20-gauge shotgun in his room, yet he was released without bond.
