A plane heading toward Minneapolis was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger allegedly tried to enter the cockpit.
On Friday, May 29, United Airlines flight UA2005 to Minneapolis was diverted to Dane County Regional Airport (DCRA) in Madison, Wis., due to an “unruly passenger,” local news outlet WMTV, WTVM and the U.K. outlet Metro reported. The flight had departed from Chicago O’Hare International Airport at 8 p.m. local time on what was supposed to be a routine two-hour flight.
An unidentified male passenger, who was allegedly “ranting in Russian,” tried to force his way into the cockpit, causing a struggle on the plane, per the outlets.
United Airlines confirmed the incident in a statement to ABC7 Chicago, saying, “United flight 2005 from Chicago to Minneapolis landed safely in Madison, Wisconsin to address a security concern with an unruly passenger. The flight is expected to continue to Minneapolis later on Friday.”
The Dane County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) removed the passenger from the aircraft and he was taken into custody, per WTVM.
There were 147 passengers and six crew members aboard the plane. No one was injured in the incident.
According to FlightRadar24, the squawk code 7500 signal “allows the pilots to contact Air Traffic Control discreetly.”
“What happens after this code is transmitted varies, but usually, security forces tend to get involved. The process, which is depicted in movies and TV, is an escort by military aircraft and authorities may also be waiting upon arrival,” the website states.
