Biden Gets Lost Onstage at Obama Center Opening, Asks Crowd, ‘Where’s My Granddaughter?’

If you were paying attention, it was almost possible to hear a collective sigh ripple through the Democratic Party.

During Thursday’s grand opening of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, former President Joe Biden unintentionally highlighted the very concerns about his mental clarity that ultimately led him to step aside from the 2024 presidential race.

“Where’s my granddaughter?” Biden asked, standing alone on stage in an uncomfortable moment that quickly drew attention.

This incident followed closely on the heels of Barack Obama’s upbeat exit, complete with air guitar moves as music played during his departure. Former First Lady Jill Biden trailed behind him.

About 15 seconds into a video clip shared on X, the camera shifted back to the center of the stage—revealing Biden still standing at the microphone. He took off his sunglasses, squinting into the crowd with a look of uncertainty.

Audience members likely shared his confusion as he remained in place, appearing ready to speak despite the event clearly moving on.

The music abruptly stopped.

“Where’s my granddaughter?” he repeated.

The camera briefly lifted upward, then returned just in time to show Biden slowly making his way offstage.

A strange scene: Biden left behind at the Obama Center ceremony, calling out for his granddaughter.

The New York Post reported that former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, along with their spouses, attended the event, as did former Vice President Kamala Harris. Actor Tom Hanks was among the celebrities present.

Biden’s widely criticized performance during a June 2024 debate against Donald Trump had already raised alarms. Within weeks, key Democratic leaders urged him to withdraw from the race, leading to Harris becoming the party’s nominee.

Even before that, those who closely followed Biden’s presidency had noted repeated instances of verbal missteps and physical stumbles.

Since the party’s loss in 2024, Democrats have wrestled with the decision to support Biden’s re-election bid.

Several high-profile figures have since published memoirs deflecting blame—Harris and Jill Biden among them—though these accounts have drawn backlash from within the party, where many hoped to turn the page on that era.

Just this Tuesday, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton added her voice, becoming the latest major Democrat to publicly question Biden’s choice to run again in 2024.
