A Delta flight departing from Atlanta experienced an unusual incident after being stuck on the tarmac for several hours due to weather delays. According to reports, a passenger on Monday night’s Flight 2879 to Chicago’s O’Hare Airport became increasingly frustrated during the extended wait. Witnesses recorded the man using the aircraft’s intercom phone to demand to be let off the plane, questioning the length of the delay and warning that he would exit on his own if not taken back to the gate.
After making his demand, the passenger moved to a cabin door and was able to open it partially, though the emergency slide did not deploy. The flight crew reported the disturbance, and the aircraft, which was carrying 168 passengers, returned to the gate at around 8:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
Security personnel removed the man from the plane, and he was taken into police custody. Maintenance crews inspected the door and confirmed it was safe before the flight eventually departed later that evening. No injuries were reported.
Delta stated that the delay was caused by storms in Chicago and emphasized that safety remains its top priority. The airline also said it has zero tolerance for disruptive behavior and apologized to passengers for the inconvenience. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, noting that airlines have already recorded nearly 500 cases of unruly passenger behavior this year. Reports also noted that it has been an eventful week for Delta, including separate incidents involving a passenger refusing to end a phone call and a baby being born during a flight.
