A Plot Uncovered Before It Could Begin
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 35‑year‑old Jessica Bowie was taken into custody after a months‑long FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force investigation revealed she had allegedly been planning an attack designed to kill lawmakers and destroy parts of the Capitol complex.
Federal agents say Bowie:
- visited the Capitol five separate times, photographing entrances, security posts, and legislative chambers
- allegedly asked an FBI confidential source for bomb‑making instructions
- purchased nails, acetone, batteries, and other materials commonly used in shrapnel‑based explosives
- expressed a desire to flee to ISIS‑controlled territory in Syria after the attack
Investigators say Bowie believed she was receiving a working explosive device and a firearm from an undercover source on August 19. Both items were inert. She was arrested immediately afterward.
