Area 51 rocked by 17 earthquakes in 24 hours: Aliens, secret tests or just nature? Internet spirals

By Mamta Raut

The desert just shook, and so did the internet. A sudden swarm of earthquakes near Area 51 has sparked a frenzy of speculation, with conspiracy theories ranging from covert nuclear tests to alien activity lighting up social media. According to the US Geological Survey, at least 17 earthquakes rattled the region within just 24 hours. The tremors ranged from magnitudes of 2.5 to 4.4, with the strongest quake striking at a shallow depth of just 2.5 miles below the surface.

More than 100 people reported feeling the shaking, turning what could have been a routine geological event into a viral moment. The proximity to Area 51, long associated with secrecy and speculation, only added fuel to the fire.

Why Area 51 always draws attention?

The base sits next to the historic Nevada Test Site, where the United States conducted nuclear weapons testing between 1951 and 1992. While seismic activity is not uncommon in Nevada’s tectonically active desert, the location of this swarm made it impossible for the internet to stay calm. For decades, Area 51 has been at the center of UFO lore, with claims of hidden alien technology and secret experiments circulating widely, especially after Robert Lazar famously alleged he worked on reverse-engineering extraterrestrial craft.

Experts weigh in, but doubts linger

Geophysicist and online personality Stefan Burns added to the intrigue with a viral video. He noted that the quake occurred in “an unusual place to get an earthquake” and highlighted its shallow depth. While Burns clarified that the event was most likely natural, he admitted there was “some ambiguity” in the seismic data. He added that the activity was “worth discussing in the context of ‘if this is a covert underground nuclear test.’” That was all it took for conspiracy theorists to jump in.

Internet goes full conspiracy mode

Social media platforms quickly filled with reactions. One user wrote, “The GOVT is up to NO GOOD.” Another chimed in, “Area 51 is most likely nuclear testing not aliens idk if that makes yall feel better or not.” The quake swarm also comes amid growing chatter about missing or deceased scientists in the US, adding another layer of suspicion for online sleuths.

Even Donald Trump was recently asked about a string of such cases. “Well, I hope it’s random, but we’re going to know in the next week and a half,” he said, as investigations by federal agencies continue.

Despite the noise, experts point out that Nevada lies in an active seismic zone where the Earth’s crust is gradually stretching, making earthquake swarms entirely possible without any secret activity. Still, when tremors strike near a place as mysterious as Area 51, logic often takes a backseat.
