The State Department announced Tuesday that it is moving forward with a special, limited-edition US passport to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary. The design includes an image of President Trump, making him the first living president to appear in a US passport. Officials had been reviewing the idea for several months, and it received final approval late Monday. According to the Associated Press, between 25,000 and 30,000 of these passports will be issued, with availability beginning just before July 4 at the passport office in Washington, DC.
This move is part of a broader pattern of adding Trump’s name and likeness to prominent national symbols and items. There have also been proposals to place his signature on all newly printed US paper money, which would also be unprecedented for a sitting president, along with plans for a gold commemorative coin featuring his image in honor of the country’s founding.
The new passport will be the standard option for those applying in person at the Washington office, though applicants can still request a traditional version by applying online or at other locations, officials said.
Design details set the commemorative passport apart from the current version. Inside, it will include a portrait of Trump along with a gold imprint of his signature. The cover will display “United States of America” in bold gold lettering at the top and “Passport” at the bottom, reversing the usual layout. The back cover will feature a small gold American flag along with the number 250 surrounded by stars.
Currently, US passports include images of Mount Rushmore, showing George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln. Other pages highlight well-known American symbols and landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell, and Independence Hall, along with natural landscapes. Passports also include quotes from Martin Luther King Jr. and several past presidents, including Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Dwight Eisenhower.
