Rising tensions tied to stalled negotiations between the United States and Iran are hitting drivers where it hurts most: at the gas pump. On Tuesday, the nationwide average price for a gallon of regular gasoline reached $4.18, the highest level recorded since April 2022, according to AAA. That figure marks roughly a 40 percent increase compared to prices when the conflict first began, as reported by The New York Times.
The spike in fuel costs mirrors a surge in crude oil prices. Brent crude, a key international benchmark, was trading at about $104 per barrel on Tuesday. That is more than 40 percent higher than before the recent escalation and about $10 above where it stood just a week earlier.
In some parts of the country, the increase has been especially sudden. In Waynesboro, Virginia, local reports indicate prices jumped by 14 cents overnight, reaching $4.18 per gallon. Meanwhile, in Columbus, Ohio, the average price rose sharply from $3.93 on Monday to $4.29 by Tuesday.
