A major change to smoking laws in the United Kingdom is set to permanently block today’s youth from ever purchasing cigarettes legally. Lawmakers have approved the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, and it now only requires formal approval before becoming law. The policy works by steadily increasing the minimum age for buying tobacco, ensuring that anyone who is currently 17 or younger will never reach a legal age to do so.

The bill also gives government officials broader control over nicotine-related products, including how tobacco and vaping items are flavored, advertised, and packaged, according to BBC reporting.

New restrictions go beyond sales rules. Vaping will be banned in more places, including inside vehicles carrying children, as well as in playgrounds, near schools, and around hospitals. However, it will still be allowed in designated outdoor areas near hospitals to support people trying to quit smoking. Private homes, outdoor hospitality spaces like pub gardens, beaches, and other open-air locations are not affected by these rules.

Health minister Baroness Merron described the legislation as a transformative step, saying it would help create a generation free from smoking and represent one of the most significant public health efforts in decades. She emphasized that the measure is expected to save lives.

Not everyone agrees with the approach. Lord Naseby raised concerns about the potential impact on businesses, arguing that more focus should be placed on education to discourage smoking rather than relying heavily on regulation.
