Her Spot on FBI’s ‘Most Wanted’ List Was Short-Lived

Federal authorities say the FBI’s newest addition to its “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list was captured almost immediately after being named. KaShawn Nicola Roper, 51, was arrested in northern Florida on Wednesday, just one day after the FBI publicly added her to the list and announced a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to her capture.
According to the FBI, tips from the public that came in after the announcement helped investigators locate Roper. She was taken into custody in High Springs, a town roughly 20 miles from Gainesville. Jail records show she is currently being held without bond in Alachua County.
Roper is accused of shooting into a vehicle during a dispute in Kansas City, Missouri, at about 3:35 a.m. on Aug. 23, 2020. Two women who were inside the vehicle were taken by a private car to a nearby hospital. One of them, 23-year-old Jazmyn Henrion, died from her injuries, while the other woman survived with injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
Prosecutors charged Roper with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon. In 2021, federal authorities also filed a charge accusing her of unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
Investigators say Roper, who is originally from Kansas, has connections to several states including Colorado, Georgia, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Texas. Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said authorities believed Roper left the area shortly after the shooting but emphasized that the case remained a priority. She said investigators never stopped searching for her.
