Trump Says White House is Investigating Mysterious Deaths and Disappearances of 10 US Scientists

President Trump said Thursday that his administration has begun looking into a series of deaths and disappearances involving American scientists who had access to highly sensitive government work.

During a conversation with reporters, a journalist noted that several scientists connected to classified projects—including nuclear and aerospace programs—had recently gone missing or been found dead.

“These scientists had access to classified material, nuclear programs and aerospace technology,” the reporter said. “Ten of them have either disappeared or died over the past few months.”

President Trump responded that the situation is being taken seriously and that officials are actively examining the cases.

“I just left a meeting about it,” Trump said. “We’re going to find out more in the next week and a half. Hopefully it’s just coincidence, but we’re going to know soon.”

He added that some of the individuals involved held important roles and that the administration intends to determine what happened.

“They were very significant people in their fields,” Trump said. “We’re going to take a close look at it.”

According to reporting by Fox News, ten scientists connected to advanced research programs have died or gone missing in recent years.

Neil McCasland disappeared on February 27, 2006. McCasland previously served in major leadership roles connected to U.S. space and defense research. His career included senior positions at the Air Force Research Laboratory and the National Reconnaissance Office. He also worked at the Pentagon and commanded research facilities at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.

Monica Jacinto Reza vanished on June 22, 2025, while hiking in Angeles National Forest with a friend. Reza was an aerospace engineer and helped create Mondaloy, a nickel-based alloy designed to withstand the extreme temperatures produced by rocket engines. At the time she disappeared, she served as Director of Materials Processing at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Steven Garcia was last seen on August 28, 2025, at his home in Albuquerque. Surveillance footage reportedly showed him leaving while carrying a handgun. Garcia worked as a government contractor connected to the Kansas City National Security Campus, which manufactures most of the non-nuclear components used in the United States’ nuclear weapons arsenal. His position reportedly required high-level security clearance.

Carl Grillmair was killed on February 16, 2026, after being shot outside his home in California. Grillmair had spent many years working on NASA-supported projects, including research tied to the Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes. His work focused on studying the structure of galaxies, dark matter and identifying potentially habitable planets.

Nuno Loureiro was shot and killed at his residence in Brookline, Massachusetts, on December 15, 2025. Loureiro was known for his work in plasma physics and fusion energy, researching technologies that could potentially produce large amounts of clean energy.

Frank Maiwald, an engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, died under unusual circumstances on July 4, 2024.

Melissa Casias disappeared on June 26, 2025, and was last seen walking in New Mexico.

Anthony Chavez was reported missing on May 8, 2025. He was last seen at his home in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Jason Thomas was reported missing on December 13, 2025. His body was later recovered on March 17, 2026, from Lake Quannapowitt after the ice thawed. Authorities said there was no immediate indication of foul play, though the official cause and manner of death have not been publicly released.

Federal officials are continuing to review the cases as part of the broader investigation.
