Under Mounting US Pressure, Cuba Sets Over 2,000 Prisoners Free
Havana has taken a notable step as tensions with the United States continue to rise. The Cuban government has announced the release of more than 2,000 prisoners, marking the second major amnesty this year. The move comes during ongoing discussions with the administration of President Donald J. Trump.
Cuba’s official newspaper, Granma, described the measure as a “humanitarian and sovereign gesture.” While the Cuban government has consistently denied acting under U.S. influence, the timing of the announcement coincides with the strongest American pressure campaign on the island in decades.

According to state media, the decision to free 2,010 inmates was based on a careful review of each individual’s crimes, good behavior in prison, the portion of the sentence already served, and their health. Certain categories of offenders—such as murderers, those convicted of drug-related crimes, and pedophiles—were not included in the release.
It remains unclear how many of those released were imprisoned for participating in anti-government protests. Recent amnesties and agreements have freed prominent dissidents as well as some individuals involved in the nationwide protests of July 11, 2021.

Cuba maintains that it does not hold political prisoners. However, activist group Prisoners Defended reported that 1,214 people were detained for political reasons in the country as of February.
The announcement follows last month’s unexpected release of 51 inmates, negotiated with the Vatican, highlighting a continuing pattern of carefully timed prisoner releases under U.S. pressure.
