Bewildered Trump interrupts himself after discovering Markwayne Mullin’s ethnicity
Donald Trump was caught off guard during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Homeland Security Secretary, Markwayne Mullin, upon discovering his Native American heritage.
The ceremony, hosted by Trump, who burst into fits of laughter after learning the new Supreme Leader’s sexuality, marked the official appointment of Republican Senator Markwayne Mullin as the successor to former Secretary Kristi Noem.
The Senate confirmed Mullin on Monday night, with the formal ceremony following shortly after. Mullin had been named as Trump’s choice to replace Noem since early March. It comes after Trump was seen “in distress” as his head jerked and eyes rolled back in an alarming health video.
As Trump read a brief about Mullin during the ceremony, he paused noticeably when he came across information about Mullin’s ethnicity.
“As the only Native American… I didn’t know that,” Trump remarked, sounding surprised. He then added, “Huh? Let me look at you. Uhh. I think that’s alright. He’s got great quality, I can tell you.”
Trump then completed the sentence, stating that Mullin is “the only Native American in the Senate.” When Trump asked how many Native Americans had served in the Senate prior, With Mullin correctly stating there had been three.
U.S. Senate records show three other Native Americans – Robert L. Owen, Charles Curtis, and Ben N. Campbell – have previously served in the U.S. Senate.
Mullin is a registered member of the Cherokee Nation, the largest tribe in the United States. The Cherokee Nation, along with several other Oklahoma tribes, has publicly criticized the actions of ICE, which Mullin will now oversee in his new position.
Native American leaders and tribes have imposed bans or limitations on ICE agents accessing their territories.
Nonetheless, numerous accounts surfaced of Native individuals being singled out and pursued during ICE operations, especially in Minnesota.
Trump’s historical remarks regarding Native American heritage and communities are complicated. He consistently mocked Senator Elizabeth Warren’s assertions of indigenous lineage, weaponizing “Pocahontas” as an insult directed at her.
Mullin’s nomination has drawn fierce opposition from segments of the public, who contend that his confrontational, combative persona renders him unfit to oversee the Department of Homeland Security.
During Noem’s tenure, federal officers have fatally shot two American citizens and subjected immigrant populations to harsh treatment whilst executing Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Mullin’s intended strategy for managing the department remains ambiguous. Many anticipate that the 48-year-old’s troubling track record – including nearly instigating a physical altercation in the Senate – foreshadows his guidance of the agency.
The swearing-in ceremony occurs during Trump’s five-day suspension of plans to strike Iranian power facilities and energy systems, applying pressure on the nation to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
