‘Horrific Situation’: Half-Sisters Found Buried in Cleveland
Two young Black girls were found dead inside suitcases buried in shallow graves on Cleveland’s east side, and investigators say they still do not know the girls’ identities or how they died. However, early DNA testing suggests the two children were related. According to a preliminary analysis, the girls appear to have been half-siblings.
The discovery was made Monday evening when a person walking a dog spotted the first suitcase near East 162nd Street and Midland Avenue. Police began searching the area and soon located a second suitcase nearby containing the remains of another child.
Authorities estimate that one of the girls was between about 8 and 13 years old, while the other was likely between 10 and 14. Cleveland Police Chief Dorothy Todd said investigators have not yet determined a cause of death. At this point, the case does not appear to match any current missing-child reports in the area.
Police also do not know how long the suitcases had been buried, though Todd indicated the remains had likely been there for some time and were not placed there recently. She added that investigators have not found any signs suggesting the bodies were dismembered.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify the children and determine what happened.
