Fireball seen shooting through night sky across multiple states
More than 100 people across the Central U.S. reported seeing a bright fireball streak across the night sky late Tuesday, with sightings spanning at least five states.
Videos captured in Indiana and Ohio show a white-green object racing overhead just before midnight.
According to NASA, a fireball is an unusually bright meteor that reaches a visual magnitude of −3 or brighter when observed from the ground.
After reviewing eyewitness reports and footage from publicly available cameras, NASA determined the fireball first became visible about 48 miles above Trinity, Indiana.
Reports submitted to the American Meteor Society came from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
NASA said the object traveled southeast at roughly 29,000 miles per hour, covering about 48 miles through the atmosphere before breaking apart 27 miles above Laura, Ohio.

“The relatively slow speed suggests that the object producing the meteor was a small fragment of an asteroid,” NASA said.
Officials also confirmed the fireball was not associated with any active meteor shower.
