Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said Democrats are prepared to pursue impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem if she does not resign, and also called for White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller to be removed from his position and potentially prosecuted.
Omar made the remarks during an appearance on MSNow’s All In With Chris Hayes, where she discussed an incident at a recent town hall in which she said she was sprayed with vinegar shortly after stating that “DHS Secretary Kristi Noem must resign or face impeachment.”
During the interview, Omar blamed what she described as heated political rhetoric for contributing to the incident and accused the Trump administration of fostering anger toward Somali immigrants. She said this climate, in her view, is contributing to political violence.
Asked directly by Hayes whether Noem should resign and whether Miller should lose his job, Omar responded:
“Definitely, Kristi Noem should resign. If not, as Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated, we will initiate impeachment. Nobody should ever have hired Stephen Miller, who basically is a copycat of the Nazis… He should definitely be out, I believe, for his part in this, definitely should be prosecuted at some point.”
Omar also argued that the individual who confronted her appeared motivated by frustration over immigration enforcement and deportations, which she connected to broader rhetoric about Somali immigrants.
Her comments come as several Democratic leaders have sharply criticized Noem and Miller over immigration policy. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said last week that Democrats are considering impeachment action against Noem and argued that Miller should also be removed from his role. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer likewise criticized both officials and called for significant changes to immigration enforcement policies.
Democratic leaders say their concerns center on the direction and impact of current immigration enforcement efforts, while Republicans have defended the administration’s approach as necessary for border security and public safety.
