Police in Arizona are investigating the disappearance of Savannah Guthrie’s mother as a suspected case of foul play.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Monday that after examining the home of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, investigators determined they “do, in fact, have a crime scene.” Citing her limited mobility and other evidence found at the residence, Nanos said authorities believe “she did not leave on her own,” according to People.

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home in the Tucson area on Saturday evening, USA Today reported. When she failed to attend church on Sunday, a friend went to check on her and then called 911. A large search effort has so far turned up no sign of her.

Savannah Guthrie did not appear on the Today show Monday and has traveled to Arizona. In a statement reported by the New York Times, she said, “On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support. Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom.” She also asked anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at 520-351-4900.

Nancy Guthrie is also the mother of two older children, Annie and Camron, according to Page Six. Her husband, Charles, died of a heart attack when Savannah was a teenager, Arizona Central reported. Nancy Guthrie, who has appeared on the Today show in the past, lives alone in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills area.

Sheriff Nanos said Nancy Guthrie does not have dementia and is “sharp as a tack,” according to the AP. “The family wants everyone to know that this isn’t someone who just wandered off,” he said. However, he noted that she has medical conditions requiring daily medication and warned that missing it for 24 hours “could be fatal.”

Although it is unusual for homicide detectives to be involved this early, Nanos said the circumstances at the scene prompted that decision. He declined to share further details but added that he does not believe there is any danger to the public.
