LAGOS, NIGERIA — A Nigerian royal has reported losing millions of dollars after falling victim to an online financial scam, according to local authorities.

Prince Adetokunbo Ademola said he was contacted via email by an individual claiming to be a wealthy foreign businessman who needed help transferring money out of his home country. The sender requested access to the prince’s bank account to complete the transaction.

“The message sounded completely legitimate,” Prince Ademola said. “He claimed to be the rightful owner of a vast fortune but said he needed a trusted partner abroad. I believed I was helping someone in need. Instead, my accounts were emptied. I feel incredibly embarrassed.”

Police say they were eventually able to trace the digital trail left by the scammers and recovered approximately $17 million. One suspect has been identified and taken into custody.

“It’s surprising how convincing these schemes can be, even when there are obvious warning signs,” said Officer Michael Stanton, who worked on the case. “Online fraud continues to evolve, and people from all backgrounds can be targeted.”

At the time of publication, Prince Ademola was reportedly attempting to move the recovered funds to a more secure international account, reaching out to contacts overseas for assistance. Those efforts had not yet received a response.
