President Trump appeared at a White House press briefing Tuesday marking one year since the start of his second term. According to the Associated Press, he spoke and answered questions for nearly two hours. During the briefing, the president outlined a broad range of accomplishments, including executive orders he has signed and his administration’s efforts to increase law enforcement presence in Washington, D.C.
Greenland. When asked how far he would be willing to go to acquire Greenland, Trump responded, “You’ll find out.” Addressing reports that Greenlanders oppose becoming part of the United States, he said he had not spoken directly with them but added, “When I speak to them, I’m sure they’ll be thrilled,” according to the New York Times.
NATO. Asked whether pursuing Greenland was worth risking divisions within NATO, Trump said he believed an agreement could be reached that would satisfy both sides. He reiterated his view that U.S. control of the territory is important for national security, adding that no president has done more for NATO than he has, according to the BBC.
Emergency meeting. French President Emmanuel Macron has called for an emergency meeting in Paris with European leaders to address tensions with the United States over Greenland and trade tariffs. Trump told reporters he would not attend, noting that Macron’s second term ends in May 2027.
Davos. Trump said he plans to use a major address in Davos on Wednesday to highlight his administration’s achievements. “More than anything else, what I’m going to be speaking about is the tremendous success that we’ve had in one year,” he said, adding that the pace exceeded his expectations.
Hells Angels. While discussing immigration enforcement, Trump claimed that some immigrants removed from the U.S. made the Hells Angels “look like the sweetest people on Earth,” before pausing to praise the motorcycle group. “I like the Hells Angels,” he said. “They voted for me. They protected me, actually.”
Macron and Starmer. Trump said he had not spoken with Macron or British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following recent Truth Social posts, including one criticizing the United Kingdom. Despite that, he said he believes he has good relationships with both leaders.
Deportations. The president said his administration is prioritizing the removal of criminals, not people living in the U.S. illegally who are working and contributing. “We’re looking to get the criminals out right now,” he said.
A childhood story. Trump also shared a personal story while discussing an executive order related to mental health institutions, recalling walking to Little League practice with his mother past a psychiatric hospital in Queens and asking her about it.
Religious reflection. During the briefing, Trump briefly addressed religion after being asked whether he believed God was proud of him. He said he felt his work, including protecting religious groups, reflected positively on his leadership, according to the AP.
