A beloved Masai giraffe named Kiko tragically died in an accident at the Toronto Zoo on New Year’s Day. The 13-year-old giraffe became stuck in a door while exploring a new section of his behind-the-scenes habitat.
Zoo staff described Kiko’s death as “heartbreaking.” He had arrived at the Toronto Zoo over a decade ago as part of a conservation effort to help grow the Masai giraffe population.
“True to his curious nature, he began exploring the space and tragically became caught in an opening door,” the zoo wrote on Facebook.

Despite staff efforts to help, Kiko panicked and suffered injuries that proved fatal due to the unique anatomy of his species. The zoo called the incident “tragic and unfortunate.”
“This loss is impacting Kiko’s Wildlife Care team particularly hard, as moving giraffes is a routine they have performed thousands of times without incident,” officials said.
Kiko, who had been recovering from a previous hoof injury, will have his body examined at the University of Guelph in Ontario. Meanwhile, the zoo’s health and safety team is investigating the circumstances of the accident.

Kiko had contributed to the zoo’s conservation program, fathering two calves with a female giraffe named Mstari, with a third calf expected in early 2026. Born in 2012 at the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina, Kiko relocated to Canada to join the Toronto Zoo.
The zoo remembered him as “a magnificent giraffe who touched so many hearts.”
