New Year’s Recipe to Bring Good Luck
Black-Eyed Peas
There are a variety of myths as to where the tradition of eating black-eyed peas comes from, but whichever you believe in, they all say the beans will bring good luck in the form of money in the New Year. As the saying goes, if you “eat poor on New Year’s, [you’ll] eat fat the rest of the year.”

Ingredients:
5 slices applewood smoked bacon
1 onion, diced
1 bell pepper, diced
2 stalks celery, diced
5 cloves garlic, minced
2 tsp creole seasoning
1 lb black-eyed peas (soaked overnight) Or If you’re short on time, this method can speed up the process. Quick Soak Method:
- Place the rinsed peas in a large pot and cover with water.
- Bring the water to a boil and let them boil for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Remove the pot from the heat, cover it with a lid, and let the peas stand for 1 hour
5 1/2 cups chicken stock
2 tsp onion powder
2 tsp complete seasoning
1/2 tbsp oregano
1 tsp crushed red pepper
2 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp black pepper
1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
2 bay leaves
6 sprigs thyme
2 smoked turkey necks
1 smoked turkey leg or wing
Instructions:
1️⃣ Soak black-eyed peas overnight, then rinse and wash them well.
Or If you’re short on time, this method can speed up the process. Quick Soak Method:
- Place the rinsed peas in a large pot and cover with water.
- Bring the water to a boil and let them boil for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Remove the pot from the heat, cover it with a lid, and let the peas stand for 1 hour
2️⃣ In a pan, sear bacon until crispy, then remove and set aside.
3️⃣ In the same pan, sauté onion, bell pepper, and celery in the rendered bacon fat with 2 tsp creole seasoning for about 5–7 minutes, until softened.
4️⃣ Add garlic and sauté for 30 seconds.
5️⃣ In your crockpot, combine black-eyed peas, sautéed veggies, chicken stock, onion powder, complete seasoning, oregano, crushed red pepper, smoked paprika, black pepper, Worcestershire sauce, bay leaves, and thyme.
6️⃣ Add smoked turkey necks and leg/wing.
7️⃣ Cook on low for 8 hours.
8️⃣ Remove meat and set aside. Mash about 1 cup of the beans, then stir back in for a creamier texture.
9️⃣ Shred the turkey and add it back in, mixing well. Top with crispy bacon before serving.
