The Trump administration has unveiled a sweeping $10 billion arms sales package to Taiwan, including medium-range missiles, howitzers, and drones—a move expected to provoke a strong response from China, according to the AP. The State Department announced the sales late Wednesday, coinciding with a nationally televised address by President Trump, who largely focused on domestic issues and did not mention China or Taiwan. U.S.-China relations have fluctuated during Trump’s second term, influenced by trade disputes, tariffs, and Beijing’s increasing assertiveness toward Taiwan, which China insists must be reunified with the mainland.

The package includes eight separate arms deals covering 82 High-Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and 420 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS)—similar to the weaponry the U.S. supplied Ukraine during the Biden administration to defend against Russia—worth over $4 billion. It also encompasses 60 self-propelled howitzer systems and related equipment valued at more than $4 billion, drones worth over $1 billion, military software exceeding $1 billion, Javelin and TOW missiles totaling more than $700 million, helicopter spare parts at $96 million, and refurbishment kits for Harpoon missiles at $91 million.

In nearly identical statements, the State Department said the sales support “U.S. national, economic, and security interests by helping the recipient modernize its armed forces and maintain a credible defensive capability.” The department added that the deals “will help improve the security of the recipient and assist in maintaining political stability, military balance, and economic progress in the region.” Federal law requires the U.S. to assist Taiwan in its self-defense, a point that has become increasingly contentious with China, which has vowed to take Taiwan by force if necessary.
