Wimbledon Keeps Rolling Along… While the Williams Sisters Discover Father Time Doesn’t Grant Wild Cards
WIMBLEDON, England — For years, Wimbledon practically felt like the Williams family’s summer home.
Between them, Venus and Serena Williams won 12 Wimbledon singles championships and six doubles titles, turning Centre Court into their personal highlight reel for nearly two decades.
Those days, however, appear to be fading into tennis history.
The sisters accepted a wildcard entry into this year’s doubles tournament, hoping to rekindle some of the old magic. Instead, the comeback ended before it really began after Serena suffered a knee injury during her first-round singles match and was forced to withdraw from doubles, ending the long-awaited reunion.
It’s hard not to admire champions who still love competing.
It’s also hard to ignore the scoreboard.
At some point, every legendary athlete discovers the cruel truth that Father Time doesn’t care how many trophies are in the display case.
He’s undefeated.
The Williams sisters transformed women’s tennis forever. They inspired a generation of players, shattered records, and spent years making opponents wonder whether second place was the best they could realistically hope for.
But Wimbledon in 2026 belongs to a different generation.
Today’s draw is filled with players who grew up watching Serena and Venus on television—then eventually became good enough to replace them.
That’s sports.
One day you’re the future.
The next day you’re the nostalgia act.

To their credit, neither sister has anything left to prove. Between them they’ve collected dozens of Grand Slam titles, Olympic gold medals, and enough career earnings to ensure neither will ever have to worry about paying for strawberries and cream at Wimbledon again.
Still, the annual calls for one more comeback are becoming increasingly difficult to justify.
There comes a point when even the greatest champions deserve to be remembered for what they accomplished—not judged against 20-year-olds who recover from injuries before breakfast.
The Williams sisters changed tennis forever.
They don’t need to keep trying to prove they still can.
