President Trump delivered a live address from the White House Wednesday night, seeking to reassure Americans that concerns about the U.S. economy are overblown, according to the Associated Press. “Eleven months ago, I inherited a mess, and I’m fixing it,” Trump said.
His remarks come at a critical moment as he works to restore his declining popularity. Recent polls indicate that many Americans are dissatisfied with his handling of the economy, citing rising inflation following tariffs that increased prices and slower hiring.
Speaking from the White House’s Diplomatic Reception Room, flanked by two Christmas trees and a portrait of George Washington, Trump attributed much of the public’s economic anxiety to his predecessor, Joe Biden.
Looking ahead to 2026, Trump and the Republican Party face a key test with the midterm elections, which will determine control of the House and Senate. The speech offered the president an opportunity to regain momentum after Republican losses earlier this year raised questions about the strength of his political coalition.
Trump used charts during the address to argue that the economy is on an upward path, though public sentiment reflects a more nuanced reality: while some stability exists, confidence in the overall economic outlook remains limited.
