Florida Governor Ron DeSantis this week signed into law a measure prohibiting minors from attending “drag” shows.
The law, now in effect, comes in response to growing concerns about children and teenagers being exposed to sexualized content at public events, where adults dressed in female attire perform for young audiences.
State officials emphasize that the law is designed to protect childhood, restore common sense, and reinforce parental authority in guiding their children’s education. Republican lawmakers defended the measure, asserting that parents’ rights to determine what their children are exposed to should outweigh ideological agendas promoting sexualized behavior at an early age. “Children should be protected, not exposed to content they don’t yet understand,” DeSantis said, clarifying that the law does not restrict adults’ freedom of expression but prioritizes the safety and well-being of minors.

Prior to the law’s passage, hundreds of shows allowed minors to attend, sparking concern among parents and conservative organizations. Child development experts warn that early exposure to sexualized content can influence the formation of values and identity.
The legislation includes strict penalties for organizers who violate the rules, including fines and possible license suspensions, reinforcing the state’s authority and ensuring clear regulations in public spaces. Progressive media outlets have criticized the law as “restrictive,” but supporters argue it addresses real risks posed to children. Family and public safety advocates praise the measure as a vital step to preserve traditional values, social order, and parental authority.

Florida’s action sets an example for other states seeking to protect minors from ideological pressures that prioritize political agendas over child welfare. The law underscores the importance of legitimate authority and family in society. In opposition to efforts that normalize behaviors undermining parental authority, the legislation affirms that child protection, safety, and respect for the law must take priority—values that no ideological experiment can replace.
