Hunter Biden disbarred in Connecticut following complaints about his gun and tax convictions

WATERBURY, Conn. — A Connecticut judge on Monday ordered the disbarment of Hunter Biden after finding that he violated the state’s rules governing attorney conduct. The decision followed complaints tied to federal gun and tax cases in which Biden was convicted before receiving a pardon last year from his father, former President Joe Biden.

Hunter Biden agreed to the disbarment as part of a settlement with the state agency that oversees lawyer discipline. In doing so, he acknowledged professional misconduct but did not admit to committing any crimes. He was previously disbarred in Washington, D.C., in May.

Biden did not address the court during a virtual hearing before Judge Trial Referee Patrick L. Carroll III. He appeared by video along with his attorney, Ross Garber.

Last year, a federal jury in Delaware convicted Hunter Biden on three felony counts related to the purchase of a firearm in 2018. Prosecutors said he falsely stated on a federal form that he was not illegally using or addicted to drugs.

In a separate California case, Biden had been scheduled to go to trial in September 2024 on charges that he failed to pay at least $1.4 million in federal taxes. He ultimately agreed to plead guilty to a mix of misdemeanor and felony charges shortly before jury selection was set to begin.

The Connecticut court determined that Biden violated multiple ethical rules, including conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation. Court filings show that he admitted to some, but not all, of the alleged misconduct. The judge also took into account his prior disbarment in Washington.

During the hearing, complainant Paul Dorsey objected to the disciplinary agreement, arguing that Biden should have been required to admit criminal conduct. Leanne Larson, an attorney for the Office of Chief Disciplinary Counsel, said the presidential pardon was a relevant factor.

Hunter Biden was admitted to practice law in Connecticut in 1997, one year after graduating from Yale Law School.
