A Florida physician was found dead inside a freezer at a Dollar Tree store in Miami, one day after she was last seen entering the store, according to local authorities and her family.

Miami police said the body of 32-year-old Massiell Garay Sanchez was discovered around 8 a.m. Sunday by a store employee. Investigators determined that Garay Sanchez entered the Dollar Tree late Saturday night but did not purchase anything.

Authorities believe she accessed a restricted, employees-only area of the store where a freezer was located and remained there overnight. She was found unresponsive the following morning. Police confirmed that Garay Sanchez was not an employee of the store.

The circumstances surrounding her death are still under investigation. Officials stated there were no signs of foul play and that she was not forced into the freezer.

“It’s something painful. A family is heartbroken because of the death of a person, and we don’t know what truly happened,” customer Gerardo Nunez told Local 10 News.

According to a GoFundMe organized by her family, Garay Sanchez was originally from Nicaragua and was a dedicated physician and loving mother. She was an anesthesiologist who specialized in congenital heart disease and was known for her work helping children and their families.

“Beyond her profession, she was a loving mother to two children, who remain in Nicaragua and were the center of her world,” her family wrote. “Her strength, warmth, and unwavering love for her family will always be remembered.”

The GoFundMe campaign was created to help return her body to Nicaragua for burial and had raised more than $2,600 as of Monday morning.

The Dollar Tree location was closed until approximately 1 p.m. Sunday while police conducted their investigation. Miami police said they are in contact with Garay Sanchez’s family and are continuing to examine the circumstances of her death, including whether she may have been dealing with personal or mental health challenges.

Authorities classified her passing as an unclassified death and have not released additional details.
