An 84-year-old Florida man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting his son in the face following a dispute over a missed visit to the man’s wife, who was in at-home hospice care.

William Nowak, who lives in Palm Bay, Florida, with his wife and their disabled daughter, reportedly confronted his son and daughter-in-law at his home on Tuesday evening. The couple had not visited over the weekend, prompting Nowak to express frustration, according to an arrest affidavit reviewed by Law&Crime.

During the argument, Nowak allegedly threatened his son, saying, “Get out of my house or I’m going to shoot you.” Authorities say he then went to his bedroom, retrieved a firearm, and returned to the kitchen, where he pointed the gun at his son and fired, striking him in the face.

The victim’s wife called 911 as Nowak reportedly returned to the bedroom, seemingly confused, and without the gun. Police arrived to find the victim “barely able to talk” and discovered what appeared to be blood and a spent shell casing in the home.

First responders transported the injured man to a hospital. Medical staff reported that the bullet had fragmented and remained lodged in his face and jaw. He was sedated due to the severity of his injuries and could not provide a statement.

Nowak was taken to a separate hospital for treatment of high blood pressure. He appeared incoherent at the time, according to the affidavit. After being medically cleared, he was booked into the Brevard County Jail.

Nowak made his first court appearance on Thursday, and his arraignment is scheduled for January 8.
