A rare post-World War II robot toy car known as the “Honeymoon Car” has sold for an astonishing $233,700—more than the expected base price of a Tesla Roadster.
The highly sought-after Japanese toy, made by ET, features a robot driver and a robot passenger and appears to draw inspiration from American convertibles of the late 1950s, complete with a prominent grille, tailfins, and a blue-tinted windshield.
Collectors note that this example is likely one of only two known to still include its original pictorial box, a detail that greatly increased its value. The toy received 37 bids before ultimately selling to an American buyer for nearly three times its high estimate during Morphy Auctions’ Toys & General Collectibles sale in Pennsylvania.
The three-day auction, held November 11–13, included 1,375 lots and brought in a total of $1.66 million, with the “Honeymoon Car” standing out as one of the event’s biggest highlights.
