A Mexican national has been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal kidnapping, torture, and murder of 18-year-old U.S. citizen Miguel Anthony Rendon in Tijuana.

Brian Alexis Patron Lopez, 24, received the maximum penalty Wednesday in a San Diego federal courtroom for his role in the 2020 killing of Rendon, a recent San Diego high school graduate who had planned to join the Marines.

The ordeal began on May 30, 2020, when Rendon was seized from his Tijuana hotel room. Surveillance video showed Lopez and accomplices pistol-whipping him, forcing him into a vehicle, and transporting him to a neighborhood where he was subjected to more than a full day of torture.

Throughout the captivity, the kidnappers sent chilling video calls to Rendon’s family, demanding either $3,000 or methamphetamine, while showing the teen bound, bloodied, and pleading for help.

Despite the family’s frantic attempts to gather the ransom, Lopez ultimately led Rendon to a remote hillside and executed him with a gunshot, abandoning his body among piles of trash.

During sentencing, U.S. District Judge William Hayes condemned Lopez’s actions, telling him, “You literally walked the victim to his death… You executed him, turned around, and you left him with trash on the hill.”

Rendon’s remains were not located and repatriated to the United States until 2022, arriving in a cardboard box. According to the Justice Department, a family member told the court that Lopez “didn’t just take his life, he took a part of mine,” describing the daily pain that will “never go away.”

Lopez was convicted in March 2025 of hostage-taking resulting in death, intentional killing while engaged in drug trafficking, and other related charges. He was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 35 years, to be served concurrently.

“Patron’s callous and blatant disregard for human life is unconscionable,” said Mark Dargis, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s San Diego Field Office. “Today’s life sentence is the price he must pay for such a gruesome attack on a U.S. citizen and the suffering inflicted on his family.”

U.S. Attorney Adam Gordon said the punishment should serve as a warning to drug traffickers and cartels who target Americans. “If you harm an American, you will face American justice,” he said. “We will continue pursuing accountability for crimes against U.S. citizens, even when those crimes occur across the border.”
