A government watchdog has confirmed that American weapons left behind during the 2021 U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan now make up the “core” of the Taliban’s military arsenal.
The Special Inspector General for Afghan Reconstruction (SIGAR), responsible for monitoring U.S. reconstruction efforts in Afghanistan, released its final forensic audit report this week. The report details billions of dollars in U.S.-supplied weapons, equipment, and military facilities that were left behind after the withdrawal, concluding that these resources now form a central part of the Taliban’s security apparatus.

The report comes more than four years after the chaotic U.S. evacuation in August 2021, which followed President Joe Biden’s April 2021 announcement to withdraw troops. The announcement ultimately led to the rapid collapse of the Afghan military and the Taliban’s takeover of the country.
NEW: Per just-released DOD IG report, Biden forfeited “96,000 ground vehicles, 51,180 general purpose/light tactical vehicles, 23,825 [Humvees], nearly 900 armored combat vehicles, 427,300 weapons, 17,400 helmet-worn night vision devices and at least 162 aircraft” to the Taliban.

SIGAR noted that the agency will close at the end of January 2026, as mandated by the National Defense Authorization Act for 2025.
Critics have highlighted the potential danger that these weapons pose: if U.S. forces ever return to Afghanistan, they could face equipment and munitions originally funded by American taxpayers.
The report has reignited debate over accountability for the withdrawal, with some pointing out that while former President Trump was impeached twice over unrelated issues, President Biden has faced limited political consequences for the handling of the Afghanistan exit.
