Delta passenger cries after catching glimpse of seatmate’s body-shaming text

A Delta Airlines passenger quietly broke down during a flight after noticing her seatmate sent a demeaning text about her.

Vanessa, a TikToker with nearly 5,000 followers, shared a video of herself with tear-streaked cheeks set to a remix of “Jump Around,” describing the painful moment. Her flight from Tampa to New York City had just taken off when she saw the man sitting next to her complain to his friends via text about being wedged next to a “huge woman.”

“We’ve taken off, and I can’t stop crying. The man next to me sends one text, ‘urgh HUGE woman sat next to me’ – I saw [because] I have eyes, and now I feel like a prisoner for the next [two] hours,” Vanessa wrote on TikTok. She added, “Be kind. If you’re feeling so inclined, can you send me some love? I’ve lost 60+ lbs and have actually been feeling really good about myself.”

In another video recorded mid-flight, Vanessa continued to wipe away tears, captioning it, “flying while fat is hard.”

Vanessa later told The Mary Sue that she noticed the man’s disdain as soon as she approached her row. “I made eye contact with the man in the window seat of my row. I could see him visibly sigh and roll his eyes. That is immediately when my radar went up,” she said.

The TikToker said she saw the text appear right in front of her after sitting down, though some viewers criticized her for seemingly looking over her seatmate’s shoulder. Vanessa noted that the man seemed to realize his message was rude and quickly sent a “series of empty texts” to push the body-shaming comment out of view.

In a follow-up video shared the day after her flight, Vanessa clarified that she “didn’t need two seats” and pointed out that the man was “actually spilling more into [her] seat.”

Since posting the video on Nov. 26, it has gone viral, garnering over 1 million views and roughly 121,000 likes, while attracting a wave of body-positive supporters.

“I’m so glad that this little moment of lemons has turned into so much lemonade for so many people. The amount of kindness that’s been spread and shared is really unbelievable,” Vanessa said in a TikTok update. Better known online as “soberspouse,” she runs a family-focused TikTok documenting her life with her two sons while balancing parenting and self-care.

She added that the outpouring of support from viewers helped “restore [her] faith in humanity.”
