Cops Shoot Ex-Deputy Suspected of Killing Son

A former California sheriff’s deputy suspected of fatally stabbing his 11-year-old son was shot and killed by law enforcement on Tuesday following a car chase along Interstate 5, authorities said.

Police in Elk Grove, near Sacramento, responded around 8 a.m. to a call from a mother concerned about the safety of her two children. She had reportedly seen home security footage showing their father assaulting the 11-year-old, officials said. Responding officers found the boy with stab wounds; he later died at a hospital. His 6-year-old sister was unharmed, according to the AP.

The father fled the scene and was later spotted driving south on I-5, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said. The pursuit ended near Lodi after the California Highway Patrol deployed a spike strip. Following the crash, officers shot the suspect, who later died at a hospital.

Authorities identified the suspect as 40-year-old Marvin Morales, a former Sacramento County sheriff’s deputy who had been fired in February 2024 after testing positive for illicit drugs, sheriff’s Sgt. Amar Gandhi told reporters.

At least two deputies were involved in the shooting, Gandhi said, along with one Elk Grove police officer. No law enforcement personnel were injured. Officials have not confirmed whether Morales fired at officers. A gun safe at his home was found empty.

Earlier this year, an internal affairs report from the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office noted that Morales overdosed on fentanyl in October 2023 after smoking what he believed was methamphetamine confiscated from a suspect. Deputies revived him with Narcan, and he was hospitalized, KCRA reported.
