NJ cop forfeits job for attacking ex-boyfriend, his new girlfriend in home invasion

A former New Jersey police officer who went on a violent rampage at her ex-boyfriend’s home and attacked him and his new girlfriend has been permanently barred from working in law enforcement in the state.

Rebecca Sayegh, 32, of Toms River, pleaded guilty on November 17 to burglary, criminal mischief, and simple assault, stemming from an incident in April at her ex-boyfriend’s Berkeley home, the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office announced.

As part of her guilty plea, Sayegh forfeited her position with the Toms River Township Police Department and “all future public employment in the State of New Jersey.” She had been suspended without pay prior to the plea. Prosecutors are seeking 180 days in the Ocean County Jail as part of her probation, along with no contact with the victims and restitution payments.

The violent confrontation occurred around 11:20 p.m. on April 25, when Sayegh used a baton to break through the front door of her ex-boyfriend’s home. Reports indicate she confronted him and his new girlfriend, pushing and shoving both before smashing items inside the house and damaging the hood of one victim’s car.

During the chaos, the new girlfriend retreated to the backyard and called 911. Sayegh also resisted arrest and attempted to fight responding officers, later threatening to burn down the house as police escorted her away. The total estimated damage was roughly $2,000 to the home and $500 to a car.

Sayegh was released from Ocean County Jail under New Jersey’s bail reform system. She had served nine years on the Toms River Police force before her suspension. Sentencing is scheduled for January 26, 2026.

Her guilty plea comes after she filed a lawsuit last year against the department and township, alleging sexual harassment by former Toms River Police Chief Mitch Little and other superiors, as well as being denied promotions due to her gender.
