Beer made from bath and laundry water hits shelves: eww or brew?
A San Francisco startup is taking “shower beer” to a whole new level—brewing it from recycled shower and laundry water.
Epic Cleantec, a cleantech company known for on-site wastewater purification, has launched two beers made with purified graywater, the San Francisco Business Times reports.
The lineup features the “Shower Hour IPA,” a crisp and juicy twist on a classic IPA, and the “Laundry Club Kölsch,” a light, smooth golden ale. Both use water collected from residential buildings and purified to what the company claims is “better than tap water in most cities in America.”

“These beers aren’t a gimmick,” Epic said on its YouTube channel. “They’re brewed with purpose, using ultra-clean recycled water and premium sustainable ingredients.” While Epic’s main business focuses on high-tech purification systems in major commercial buildings—Salesforce Tower among them—the startup hopes its beer will help change public perceptions about drinking recycled wastewater.

The company plans to produce 250,000 cans next year, partnering with Devil’s Canyon Brewing Company in San Carlos. The beers are currently available online and will soon appear on shelves at BevMo, Total Wine & More, and Bianchini’s Market, the Business Times reported.
So raise a glass—and maybe don’t dwell too much on where your beer came from before it hit the can.
