At least 36 people have died after a massive fire swept through three blocks of a high-rise housing complex in Hong Kong on Wednesday.

Police reported multiple calls from residents trapped in their homes at Wang Fuk Court, a residential complex in the northern Tai Po district.

Firefighters are struggling to contain the intense blaze amid thick plumes of smoke. Live footage from the scene shows crews directing powerful streams of water from ladders toward the flames. Authorities say at least one firefighter has died in the fire.

Wang Fuk Court consists of eight blocks and roughly 2,000 units. The fire, which began at 2:51 p.m. local time, has been classified as a No. 5 alarm—the highest level of severity by the Fire Services Department.

The Hong Kong government confirmed that seven people have been hospitalized, with four pronounced dead, two in critical condition, and one in stable condition.
