Court documents have released photos showing the arrest of Luigi Mangione, accused of assassinating the UnitedHealthcare CEO, as his defense team challenges Justice Department prosecutors over whether the potential death penalty and top charges should proceed.
The images, taken from bodycam footage, show Mangione sitting alone in a restaurant corner wearing a medical mask, pulling it down to speak with an officer, and ultimately being handcuffed.
Mangione’s attorneys have asked a federal judge to suppress evidence collected during the arrest, alleging that officers in Altoona, Pennsylvania, improperly seized items from his backpack and questioned him before reading his Miranda rights.

A Justice Department attorney argued the search was justified by safety concerns, and that the only statement made pre-Miranda that prosecutors intend to use is when Mangione allegedly gave a false name in response to a question that did not require the warning.
The victim, Thompson, 50, a father of two from Minnesota, was visiting New York City for an investor conference when surveillance footage captured him walking outside a Manhattan hotel. A masked assailant approached from behind and opened fire.

Mangione allegedly fled on a bicycle and later took a bus out of town. Five days later, customers at an Altoona McDonald’s recognized him from a wanted poster and alerted police, who arrested him and reportedly recovered the murder weapon along with writings critical of the health insurance industry.
While some supporters have hailed Mangione as an anti-capitalist figure, prosecutors note that his public stops, including at a Manhattan Starbucks and the McDonald’s where he was apprehended, were key to his capture. The Justice Department alleges he meticulously planned the attack with the aim of sparking a public debate about the healthcare sector.

According to New York prosecutors, Mangione allegedly targeted Thompson during the investor conference and shot him from behind with a 3D-printed ghost gun equipped with a suppressor.
