The “ShamWow guy” is stepping into politics — and he says he’s ready to clean up Congress.
Vince Shlomi, the well-known infomercial personality behind the popular “ShamWow” towel, has officially launched a congressional run in Texas, according to a filing with the state’s Republican Party.
Shlomi is challenging longtime Republican Rep. John Carter, 84, who has represented the district for more than 20 years and recently announced he will seek another term. That leaves Shlomi facing a well-established incumbent with deep roots in the district.
Speaking with Fox News, Shlomi said his goal is to “destroy wokeism” and push back against what he views as damaging political division in the country. He said he was inspired to run because he wants to “make America happy.”
Shlomi previously made headlines in 2009 after being arrested following an altercation with a woman who was also arrested. Prosecutors declined to file charges. In a later 2013 interview with NBC News, Shlomi acknowledged his mistakes, saying he takes “full responsibility” and planned to cut back on partying. “People understand you make mistakes in life,” he said. “Hopefully I won’t make another mistake.”
His candidacy is now listed on the Texas GOP website ahead of the state’s December filing deadline, although he has not yet submitted paperwork with the Federal Election Commission. Texas voters will head to the polls for the primary in March.
In the most recent financial quarter, another GOP challenger, businessman Raymond Hamden, briefly outpaced Carter in fundraising — though only because he injected $105,500 of his own money into his campaign.
