California dad claims Dutch horse trader knowingly sold lame 5K equine

A California man is taking legal action after claiming a Dutch horse dealer sold him an expensive but unusable animal.

According to a lawsuit, Gary Kamins sent his daughter Gabby and her trainer, Charmaine Levinson, to Europe in August 2021 to purchase a horse for competitive riding. Gabby, now 25, had been involved in the sport since childhood.

The pair selected a male horse named Grodino, also known as “Dino,” for $475,000 from Netherlands-based dealer Alan Waldman. Kamins alleges that Waldman’s business allowed only a limited medical check and did not provide veterinary records before the sale.

After the horse was shipped to the Port of Los Angeles and transported to Levinson’s stable in Pacific Palisades, Kamins claims it quickly became clear the animal was not healthy. Court filings state that Dino showed signs of pain and distress, refusing to jump or train.

Veterinarians later diagnosed the horse with a bone spur in its spine and a worsening spinal condition, according to the lawsuit. Despite ongoing treatment, Kamins says the horse never recovered or competed.

Kamins alleges that Waldman refused to refund the purchase price. He also claims he spent additional money over four years paying Levinson to care for and attempt to rehabilitate the horse, though no specific amount was listed. The lawsuit further claims Levinson received a commission from Waldman.

Neither Waldman nor Levinson were immediately available for comment.
