I don’t want to tell people how we got our puppy

Dear Miss Manners:

My husband and I recently expanded our family with a dog. We explored every animal shelter and rescue we could find, but none of those options worked out. We also researched reputable breeders, but the costs were far beyond our budget.

Ultimately, we purchased a puppy from what some might call a “backyard breeder.” The woman was lovely, her puppies were healthy and well-cared-for, and her prices were reasonable. There was nothing shady, illegal, or “puppy-mill-y” about her. We spent a great deal of time considering our options and are delighted with our new puppy.

Yet whenever someone asks about our new dog, they expect a shelter story. Many are shocked we didn’t adopt. I don’t want to give a three-year recap of our research and decision-making every time, but I feel nervous—and almost embarrassed—to admit our puppy wasn’t adopted.

How can I respond honestly without inviting judgment or lecturing, Miss Manners?
