OPERATION SWAMP SWEEP: Trump to Surge 250 Federal Agents in New Orleans for Immigration Enforcement – Incoming Mayor Plans to Impede Feds (VIDEO)
The Trump Administration is preparing federal agents for a new immigration enforcement effort in the Southeastern United States, an initiative known as “Swamp Sweep.”
According to reports, the Department of Homeland Security plans to deploy roughly 250 immigration officials to Mississippi and Louisiana. In Louisiana, operations are expected to focus primarily on the New Orleans region.
New Orleans Mayor-elect Helena Moreno announced Friday that she is launching a website designed to provide information to undocumented immigrants and to allow activists to report alleged misconduct by federal agents. “My first priority is to keep our community safe,” she said, according to Fox New Orleans. She added that reports of due-process issues in other cities are concerning and emphasized the need for accountability and public awareness of legal protections.
Sur Weishar, a policy and research fellow with the Jesuit Social Research Institute, voiced support for the mayor-elect’s approach, calling it “a real test of our democracy and the decency of the American people.”
Several Louisiana Republicans, however, have welcomed the federal operation. Keith Conley, Police Chief of Kenner, said local law enforcement intends to support federal efforts, noting that local departments often lack the tools to verify an individual’s immigration status. Conley also downplayed media reports alleging misconduct by immigration agents, urging anyone with concerns to contact the FBI or local authorities.
In Mississippi, Republican officials have also expressed support. State Attorney General Lynn Fitch said her office was proud to be the first in Mississippi to formally partner with ICE. “We look forward to working with Secretary Noem and the president to protect our communities and strengthen our efforts to combat human trafficking, drug cartels, and violent crime,” Fitch told Fox News Digital. She added that these efforts aim to make Mississippi and the nation “safer than ever before.”
Another Mississippi leader, U.S. Rep. Michael Guest, chairs the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border Security and Enforcement and has also backed the initiative.
In September, President Trump signed a Presidential Memorandum establishing the “Memphis Safe Task Force,” which brings together 13 federal agencies and National Guard units to address crime in the Memphis area.
The administration has faced resistance to immigration-related operations in several Democratic-led states and cities, including California, Illinois, and Oregon. National Guard troops are preparing to exit Chicago after a federal appeals court blocked the administration’s deployment there, while the Supreme Court continues to review the case.
In California, President Trump encountered lawsuits and public backlash from Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass over federal deployments, which coincided with periods of civil unrest. In Portland, Oregon, federal officers clashed repeatedly with violent demonstrators during operations that local and state officials also sought to block through legal challenges. Some federal court cases in Oregon remain ongoing, even after a ruling in California allowed the administration to federalize the National Guard and proceed with troop deployments.
