An Australian man was removed from a Royal Caribbean cruise after allegedly assaulting another passenger, but his family chose to continue their trip without him.
The 44-year-old, whose name has not been released, was traveling with his family on the “Anthem of the Seas” when the incident reportedly occurred just four days into the voyage, the Otago Daily Times reported. New Zealand police were notified and boarded the ship when it docked in Dunedin, where they issued a warning and escorted the man off the vessel, according to a statement obtained by PEOPLE.
The alleged victim sustained a cut to his nose and received treatment, the outlet reported. Meanwhile, the removed passenger was left to arrange his own return to Australia. His family opted to continue the remainder of the 10-day cruise without him.

After departing Dunedin, the ship visited three additional towns in New Zealand and is scheduled to return to Australia on Nov. 20, according to CruiseMapper. Royal Caribbean’s policies state that any “inappropriate or abusive behavior,” including “uninvited physical contact,” may result in removal from the ship. The rules also cover unsafe behavior, such as climbing ship railings.
This is not the first time Royal Caribbean has dealt with unruly passengers. In September, a ship returned to port after a large onboard fight broke out near a kiddie pool, with several passengers requiring hospitalization. In December 2024, a passenger died while in custody on the ship after attacking crew members; his family said he had been administered a sedative shortly before his death.
Royal Caribbean has not yet commented on the recent incident.
