My wife has 12 cats and our house is disgusting

DEAR ABBY: My wife of 15 years is a devoted cat lover. When we first married, she begged me to let her cat, which had been living at her mother’s house, move in with us. I agreed, reluctantly, on the condition that the litter box would be properly maintained and that the cat wouldn’t be allowed on the kitchen counters.

Now, we live in a house instead of a trailer, and I am surrounded by more than a dozen cats. My wife does a poor job of keeping up with the litter boxes, and our home—and everything in it—has an unbearable odor. I’ve asked her repeatedly to rehome some of the cats, but every request turns into an argument. I love my wife, but I can no longer tolerate the smell and the impact it’s having on my daily life. I don’t know what to do. Please help.
