A Florida man who had just purchased a brand-new Chevrolet Corvette is facing two counts of vehicular manslaughter after a high-speed crash on an oceanside road killed a husband and wife.

Scott P. March, 63, allegedly struck a Jeep carrying Thomas and Julia Ann Lauck, both 73, while attempting to pass it at excessive speed, authorities said. The collision ejected the couple from their vehicle, killing Thomas at the scene and Julia Ann a few days later at a hospital.

According to a motion for pretrial detention, the crash occurred around 6 p.m. on Nov. 1 along State Road A1A near Sandpiper Ridge Road in Ormond-By-The-Sea. March was reportedly driving his 2026 Corvette north at 110 mph in a 45 mph “no pass zone” when he collided with the Laucks’ Jeep. Investigators noted that just 5.5 seconds before impact, March was traveling at 147 mph. The area is lined with homes, businesses, and pedestrians, according to police.

“Multiple witnesses saw a driving pattern leading up to the crash that was extremely reckless in nature, including passing multiple vehicles in no-pass zones, excessive speed, and almost crashing into numerous other vehicles,” detectives wrote in the affidavit.

March’s mug shot showed facial injuries, including a black eye. At a bond hearing, he testified that he had purchased the Corvette earlier that day for more than $200,000, putting $10,000 down but unable to recall additional details. “I didn’t really pay attention to the numbers. I just wanted the car,” he reportedly said.

Two days after the crash, March was arrested for loitering on a 120-foot yacht called the Gale Winds. He claimed to own the boat, but authorities said the true owner had not given him permission to be on the vessel.

March also has a prior DUI conviction in California from 2018. He remains in Volusia County Jail without bond, with his next court date set for Dec. 2.

The victims’ obituaries painted a picture of a devoted and loving couple. Julia Ann Lauck was remembered as “devoted” to her husband, taking joy in simple moments like watching sunsets at the beach and tending her gardens. Thomas Lauck was described as “a man of quiet strength, steady character, and a generous heart,” who loved fishing, combing the beach with a metal detector, and spending time with his wife.
