Police in Boise, Idaho, are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a nine-year-old girl Tuesday afternoon.

According to the City of Boise, officers responded to a vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision at a neighborhood intersection. The child was transported to a local hospital, where she later died from her injuries.

Preliminary findings indicate that the driver of a pickup truck had been traveling west on Ada Street and came to a stop at a stop sign at Harrison Boulevard. The young pedestrian, who was also headed west on Ada, had stopped on the northeast sidewalk corner of the intersection.

Traffic on Harrison Boulevard was heavily backed up, and investigators say the collision occurred when both the driver and the pedestrian entered the intersection at the same time, with the driver attempting a right turn to head north on Harrison.

A standard NCIC records check revealed that the driver, identified as Elvin Ramos-Caballero, who remained on scene and cooperated with officers, had an outstanding federal warrant involving U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Boise Police notified ICE, and agents later took Ramos-Caballero into custody.

Boise School District Superintendent Lisa Roberts released a message to families acknowledging the tragedy and assuring the community that support systems are in place:

“Last night, our community experienced a heartbreaking incident in which a Washington Elementary School student lost their life after being struck by a vehicle. Our thoughts are with the student’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire Washington community during this difficult time.

“In moments like this, we are reminded of the vulnerability of the young people we serve and of our shared responsibility to help keep students safe—whether they are walking, biking, riding the bus, or traveling in any way on our city streets.”

She encouraged families to review the district’s Safe Routes to School resources and noted that crisis team members and counselors are available to assist anyone in need.

Boise Police Chief Chris Dennison also expressed condolences, calling the situation “a parent’s worst nightmare” and offering support to the girl’s family and community.

Police say additional details will be released as the investigation continues.
