Omaha, NE — President Joe Biden delivered a pointed critique of President Trump on Friday, saying the nation faces a “very, very dark moment” under Trump’s leadership. Speaking at a Democratic fundraiser in Omaha, Biden accused Trump of worsening hunger in the U.S., undermining the Constitution, and using his presidency to benefit his own family, according to the New York Times.
“You work for us, Mr. President. We don’t work for you,” Biden said, adding that Trump had taken a “wrecking ball” to the White House, both literally and figuratively, and to the rule of law.
In his first explicitly political speech since leaving the Oval Office, Biden acknowledged the country’s challenges but pointed to recent election outcomes as a reason for optimism, the Times reported. “This isn’t a golden age,” he said, noting, per CNN, that “the only gold is the stuff [Trump is] hanging on the mantle” in the White House.
Biden highlighted positive developments from recent elections and revisited themes familiar from his past campaigns, including support for labor unions and criticism of Republican tax policies, which he said favor the wealthy. He also discussed his own health, including a recent prostate cancer battle, and criticized Trump for cutting funding for cancer research.
Although Biden’s influence in the Democratic Party has appeared to wane—he did not play a prominent role in key gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia—he received a warm welcome in Nebraska. Local Democrats greeted him with “Jomaha” signs. The event also featured remarks from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who is considered a potential 2028 presidential contender.
