A massive crocodile was captured on camera swimming through a Florida canal with a large dog clamped in its jaws near an elementary school and several homes.

The harrowing scene was witnessed by Satellite Beach resident Zach Spurlock on Monday, who told KXII he has filmed the imposing reptile multiple times.

“It was just heartbreaking. I’m a dog owner, so I know pets are part of the family. I couldn’t help but feel for them that their worst fear had come true,” Spurlock said. “A friend texted me while walking with their baby in a stroller—they saw this 11-foot crocodile swimming just 10 feet away with a Golden Retriever-type dog in its mouth. I had to go there immediately.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission confirmed the incident, saying the crocodile was captured with help from fire rescue as neighbors looked on in shock. It is not yet known if the dog’s owner has been identified or notified.

Spurlock said he first filmed the crocodile about three weeks ago. “I was just six feet away on dry land. It was sunning with its mouth open, completely unafraid of humans. When I saw that behavior, I knew something bad was going to happen,” he said.

The croc had been relocated three or four times previously but kept returning to the canal, which it clearly favors. It is the only confirmed American crocodile in the area since 2018 and has now been placed into permanent captivity after careful consideration.

Wildlife experts reminded residents to keep pets and children away from the water’s edge at all times.
