A suspected murderer is on the run after being mistakenly released from a California jail, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the suspect, 20-year-old Isaiah Jamon Andrews of Kent, Washington, was wrongly freed from the Martinez Detention Facility on October 22.
Once staff realized the error, deputies immediately searched the surrounding area but confirmed that Andrews had already left. The U.S. Marshals Service has since joined the ongoing manhunt to locate and apprehend him.
Andrews is the primary suspect in the October 15 homicide of a 20-year-old man who was shot and killed at a hotel in Seattle’s Northgate neighborhood, according to Seattle Police Detective Brian Pritchard.
Just three days after the killing, police in Contra Costa County, California, spotted Andrews driving in the area. A pursuit ensued and ended when officers from Antioch and Pittsburg took him into custody. He was booked into the county jail on suspicion of homicide.
On October 20, Andrews appeared in court for an extradition hearing and was ordered held without bail pending transfer to King County Jail in Seattle to face murder charges. However, two days later, he was mistakenly released.
The sheriff’s office has not yet revealed how the error occurred or why the public was not notified until five days later, on Monday. Officials say an internal investigation is underway to determine what went wrong.
As of Tuesday, U.S. Marshals and local authorities were still searching for Andrews. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to contact law enforcement immediately.
