DEMOCRAT BACKFIRE: The Government Shutdown Has Awakened the Public About How Many People Are on Food Stamps

One unexpected consequence of the ongoing government shutdown — something Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democrats likely didn’t foresee — is how sharply it has revealed the sheer scale of federal food assistance in the United States.

What was once known simply as “food stamps,” a temporary lifeline for struggling families, was rebranded years ago as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The change helped destigmatize participation and encouraged more people to sign up. Now, millions more Americans — and many non-citizens — rely on the program than ever before.

As the shutdown continues, taxpayers are learning just how massive the system has become. According to The Hill, over 40 million people could see reduced or suspended benefits in the coming days.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has warned that if the shutdown stretches into November, it may withhold billions in SNAP contingency funds. Experts estimate the department currently has between $5 billion and $6 billion available — not enough to cover the roughly $8 billion needed to fund next month’s benefits, but enough for partial payments to help offset grocery costs.

On Friday, the USDA announced it will not tap those contingency funds if the shutdown lasts past October 31 — a move widely seen as an effort to pressure Senate Democrats into supporting a Republican-backed spending bill to reopen the government.

Meanwhile, some analysts and journalists are highlighting another dimension of the issue — who exactly is receiving the aid. A Newsmax segment cited data showing that many recent arrivals under the Biden administration are now among SNAP recipients.

According to those figures:

  • 45% of Afghan immigrants receive food stamps

  • 42% of Somali immigrants

  • 34% of immigrants from Iraq

  • 23% of Haitian immigrants

  • And an estimated 59% of illegal aliens are collecting SNAP benefits

That means, according to these reports, a majority of those receiving taxpayer-funded food assistance are not American citizens.

As one commentator observed, “We didn’t know about any of this before the government shutdown started.”

The situation has sparked renewed debate about welfare spending, immigration policy, and the broader fiscal priorities of Washington. President Trump and congressional Republicans continue to push for a resolution that restores government operations while addressing the misuse of federal funds — something that many Americans now see in a new light.
