A senior Venezuelan official has accused President Donald Trump of actively working to overthrow the government of Nicolás Maduro.

Tarek William Saab, Venezuela’s attorney general and a close ally of Maduro, told the BBC that there is “no doubt” President Trump is pursuing regime change and aims to turn Venezuela into a “colony” of the United States. His remarks follow a significant increase in U.S. military activity in the Caribbean, highlighted by the recent arrival of the guided-missile destroyer USS Gravely in Trinidad and Tobago — the largest American deployment to the region in decades.

U.S. officials maintain that the buildup is part of an intensified campaign against drug trafficking. Washington claims to have eliminated at least 43 individuals in strikes on suspected drug-running vessels, though it has not publicly provided proof of narcotics aboard at least ten of those boats, according to CNN. Both Venezuela and Colombia have accused the U.S. of targeting civilians.

President Trump has repeatedly labeled Maduro the leader of a transnational drug-trafficking organization — a charge Maduro denies. Saab, however, contends that Washington’s true goal is to seize Venezuela’s abundant natural resources, including gold, oil, and copper. He added that Venezuela is prepared to defend itself against any potential land invasion but remains open to diplomatic talks.

The United States, along with numerous other nations, does not recognize Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader, citing widespread allegations of electoral fraud in the country’s 2024 election. While the U.S. Constitution requires Congress to formally declare war, President Trump recently told reporters, “We are certainly looking at land now, because we’ve got the sea very well under control,” according to the New York Times.
